Meraux Foundation Highlights Impact of Glass Recycling at Docville Farm

New report shows more than 93,000 pounds of glass diverted from landfills since 2023

The Meraux Foundation released a new impact report highlighting the success of its glass recycling initiative at Docville Farm, underscoring the program’s growing role in environmental sustainability and coastal resilience.

Since launching in May 2023, the Docville Farm drop-off hub has diverted 93,049 pounds of glass—equivalent to 186,097 bottles—from landfills, according to the report. To put that impact into perspective, those bottles would stack 141 times the height of the Eiffel Tower or stretch 31 times the length of Bourbon Street

All collected glass is recycled locally by Glass Half Full into sand used for coastal restoration and cullet used to make new glass bottles.

“This report shows the power of simple, accessible solutions,” said Rita Gue, president of the Meraux Foundation. “When residents have an easy way to recycle, they respond; and the result is a real, measurable impact for our environment and our community.”

The Docville Farm recycling hub builds on the Foundation’s broader investment in glass recycling and coastal innovation in St. Bernard Parish. In 2024, the Foundation committed $3.7 million to support the development of Glass Half Full’s state-of-the-art recycling facility in Chalmette, including $2 million to the nonprofit Glassroots and $1.7 million to parish government for infrastructure improvements.

That facility has the capacity to recycle more than 300,000 pounds of glass daily, creating jobs, expanding recycling access.

“This drop-off location at Docville Farm is critical to making recycling accessible and impactful,” said Franziska Trautmann, co-founder and CEO of Glass Half Full. “The Meraux Foundation’s commitment has helped create a true local ecosystem that keeps glass out of landfills and puts it to work strengthening our coast and communities. It’s a model for what’s possible when partners invest in practical, community-driven solutions.”

The Meraux Foundation continues to prioritize initiatives that align environmental stewardship with economic development, demonstrating that sustainability investments can deliver long-term benefits for both people and place.
